American-born sumo grand champion Yokozuna Akebono, accompanied by his daughter Katerine, stands as he enters the residence of U.S. Ambassador Thomas S. Foley in Tokyo March 29, 2001. Akebono was presented by Foley a letter of appreciation from Secretary of State Colin Powell recognizing his contribution to U.S.-Japan relations as the first American-born yokozuna in sumo history.
