WOMEN'S RIGHTS ACTIVISTS PROTEST TO JORDANIAN DEPUTY IN AMMAN.
Women's rights activists protest to a Jordanian deputy on his arrival
at parliament August 10, 2003. Dozens of women staged a sit-in outside
Parliament on Sunday to protest the recent rejection of a law that
favours women's advancement. A majority of Jordan's 110 deputies turned
down amendments to Jordan's Penal and civil codes that gave women more
rights in divorce and were passed by the government in December 2001
during parliament's absence. Deputies described both laws as
contradicting Islamic law and helping to undermine Muslim values.
