MOHAMMAD KHALEEL QURESHI READS THE KORAN NEAR A PHOTOGRAPH OF HIS SON HASHIM, WHO SURRENDERED RECENTLY FOR A 1971 HIJCAKING, IN SRINAGAR.
Mohammad Khaleel Qureshi reads the Koran next to a photograph of his son Hashim Qureshi at his residence in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir in India on December 31, 2000. Hashim, a Kashmiri separatist who hijacked an Indian plane in 1971, surrendered to Indian authorities December 29 after nearly 30 years of exile. Hashim, who was only 17 when the hijacking occurred, released a statement to the media in which he called for an uprising by the people in Pakistan-ruled Kashmir.
