An Indian soldier with a light machine gun mans a military post at Gumri, 115 kms (71 miles) northeast of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir April 28. The 220 kms long Srinagar-Kargil highway was reopened for the traffic after the road was closed due to heavy snow in January this year. Last summer Indian and Pakistani troopers fought a heavy battle after separatist militants occupied Indian mountain heights at Drass, Kargil and Batalik sectors in Kargil district.
