INDIAN ARMY SOLDIERS REMOVE THE BODY OF A SUSPECTED SEPARATIST MILITANT
AT SOPORE.
Indian soldiers carry the body of a suspected separatist militant in a
camp at Sopore, 48 km (30 miles) north of Srinagar March 19, 2002 at
the end of a siege in a nearby mosque. Security forces in Indian
Kashmir shot dead two Muslim militants holed up in a mosque on Tuesday
to end a 12-hour siege, police said. It was the third time since a
surge in separatist violence in recent weeks that rebels had sought
refuge in a mosque in the disputed Himalayan region, which is at the
heart of a tense military standoff between India and Pakistan.
