A WORKER REMOVES CAVIAR FROM A STURGEON AT A FLOATING FISH FACTORY NEAR ATYRAU.
A Kazakh worker removes caviar from a sturgeon at a floating fish factory near the town of Atyrau April 16, 2001, as the brief season of catching the noble species is in full swing along the Ural river in western Kazakhstan. The Central Asian state's government took this year's fishing campaign under its control after widespread poaching, poor ecology and uncontrolled catches had undermined the number of Caspian sturgeons yeilding the precious roe.
