Hurricane Keith buffeted the Yucatan on October 1, 2000, with heavy rains stretching to Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua and winds of nearly 135 mph (214 kph). Mexican officials were evacuating 5,000 people from low-lying areas around Chetumal, a city of 250,000 on the border with Belize.
