SOUTH KOREAN POLICEMAN CLASH WITH PROTESTERS IN SEOUL.
A South Korean policeman clashes with protesters during an anti-government protest rally in central Seoul July 6. The hard-line union group, Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), organised the rally to protest over the government's tough stance against union workers' strikes. Recent strikes at a Seoul hotel and an insurance group prompted a strong-armed response from South Korean riot police who allegedly kicked and clubbed strikers. About 3,000 protesters demanded an apology for the crackdown from President Kim Dae-jung.
