Residents and activists fight against riot police entering a village near U.S. military bases in Pyongtaek, about 80 km (50 miles) south of Seoul May 4, 2006. The South Korean defence ministry, which expropriated the village area for the expansion of U.S. military bases, deployed its soldiers early Thursday as police suppress the protesters. The ministry began setting up fences and guard posts in the village to begin construction for the U.S. bases where 8,000 U.S. troops will be moved from the Seoul metropolitan zone by December 2008.
