A tourist walks past as Sri Lankan workers rebuild a small tourist hotel in Unawatuna, southern Sri Lanka. A tourist walks past as Sri Lankan workers rebuild a small tourist hotel, which was destroyed by the Asian tsunami, in Unawatuna, southern Sri Lanka April 10, 2005. Traditionally Sri Lanka's majority Sinhalese and Tamil communities hold late night parties to mark the same New Year in April. But as the Indian Ocean island struggles to return to normality after the December 26, 2004 tsunami swept around 40,000 people to their deaths and flattened coastal towns and villages, this year's festival is low key out of respect for the dead.
