Theun River, Lao - Peoples Democratic Republic
LAOTIANS SAIL IN "METAL BOAT" ON THEUN RIVER.
Laotians sail in a "metal boat" on Theun river July 12, 1994. Although American involvement in the area ended in 1975, U.S. war wreckage is still put to good use throughout Laos. The locals call these canoes "metal boats"; American pilots would call them B-52 reserve fuel tanks. Made in jungle workshops from B-52 bomber fuel tanks jettisoned in raids over Vietnam and Laos between 1963 and 1975, these boats are a popular form of river transport as this Loatian family demonstrates.
