IN CENTRAL BEIRUT.
A member of the Lebanese army's engineering corps steps into a manhole
in central Beirut on March 19, 2002. The army is checking the sewer
network around the Phoenicia Hotel for explosives and other weapons
ahead of an Arab summit set to take place there on March 27-28. Some
8,000 policemen, army and other security staff will be deployed to
protect 22 Arab heads of state expected to take part in the summit.
