Al-Arabi Belhaj prepares tea inside a troglodyte cave house in the western mountain town of Gharyan, 100 km (62 miles) south of Tripoli, June 15, 2013. Belhaj spent the first 10 years of his life in this home, dug vertically into the ground by his ancestors, who excavated caves around a central squared courtyard. Each room housed a family with cooking areas - smaller caves - used communally. Troglodyte houses can also be found in other towns in the Nafusa mountains and neighbouring Tunisia.
