Steve Fossett takes off in historic GlobalFlyer flight around the world.
Steve Fossett takes off at twilight to attempt the first solo, non-stop round the world flight in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, late February 28, 2005. Fossett, who sailed around the globe in a balloon three years ago, took off from the Kansas airfield on Monday trying to circle the Earth nonstop in a one-engine plane without refueling. Fossett hopes to touch down back in Kansas in a little less than three days after covering 23,000 miles (37,010 km) at altitudes of up to 52,000 feet (15,850 metres) and speeds that may exceed 285 mph (460 kph).
