ADVENTURER FOSSETT AND ENEVOLDSON WAIT ON AIR FIELD BEFORE WORLD
ALTITUDE RECORD IN OMARAMA.
Perlan Project team leader Einar Enevoldson and U.S. adventurer Steve
Fossett (R) wait on the air field before their attempt at the world
altitude record in Omarama August 10, 2002. The Perlan Project is an
attempt to take a German DG505 glider past the existing record of
14,938m (48,996 feet), through severe turbulence and extreme
temperatures to 18,288m (60,000 feet). If the mission succeeds, a
pressurised sailplane will be built to attempt reaching about 30,000m
(100,000 feet) on the edges of space. REUTERS/Simon Baker
