COVICTED MURDERER WITH FAILING KIDNEY POSE PROBLEM FOR PRISON
OFFICIALS.
Horacio Alberto Reyes-Camarena, pictured in this 1997 Two Rivers Prison
booking photo, is a convicted murderer with failing kidneys and is
presenting Oregon officials with a tough choice. Officials are trying
to figure out the cheapest way to keep him alive until they can execute
him. The cash-strapped state pays $120,000 a year for a dialysis
machine at Umatilla State Prison. That treatment could continue for a
decade as he appeals his death sentence for the 1996 murder of an
18-year-old woman. REUTERS/Two Rivers Prison/Handout/FILE
