Maya Indian Maria Avila lays out a banana leaf in the preparation of "pibipollos" or special offerings of food to the dead in her home in the village of Pomuch in Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, some 1348 km (838 miles) from Mexico City, November 1, 2006. Local Maya Indian families prepare large tamale-like sandwiches, stuffed with meat and cooked in a hole in the earth, which symbolize the burial of a human body during an intimate annual "Day of the Dead" ritual.
