ETHNIC ALBANIAN CELEBRATE THE SUCCESS OF THE DUI PARTY IN MACEDONIA'S
ELECTION.
Supporters of former ethnic Albanian guerrilla chief Ali Ahmeti shout
and cheer the success of his Democratic Union for Integration party in
Macedonia's parliamentary elections on Sunday, September 16, 2002,
outside the DUI headquarters in the mainly Albanian western town of
Tetovo. Macedonia's opposition Social Democrats trounced ruling
nationalists in a largely trouble free election, hailed by the West on
Monday as a major boost for peace after last year's Albanian rebellion.
In another key development in Sunday's general election, minority
Albanians switched support from the discredited party which has shared
power with the Macedonian nationalists for four years to a new team led
by ex-rebel chief Ali Ahmeti. REUTERS/Hazir Reka
