TOKYO'S BENCHMARK NIKKEI AVERAGE TUMBLES TO NEW 19-YEAR LOWS.
Tokyo businessmen look at stock prices on an electric quotation board at a
Tokyo securities office October 10, 2002. Tokyo's Nikkei average tumbles to
new 19-year lows on Thursday morning as banks led a broad-based retreat on
nervousness over Japanese government policies to ease the deflationary
effects of a tougher stance on bad loans. The benchmark Nikkei average was
down 3.11 percent or 265.67 points at 8,273.67 by midsession after tumbling
4.01 percent to 8,197.22, its lowest level since mid-1983. REUTERS/Kimimasa
