BRAZILIAN CURRENCY SETS NEW RECORD LOW AGAINST THE DOLLAR.
The Brazilian Real currency, shown here in Brasilia July 11, 2001,
opened 2.9 percent weaker at a record low on the back of a growing
panic about fallout from the economic problems in neighboring
Argentina, traders said. The real weakened to 2.56 per dollar, a new
record trading low, and currently stands some 31 percent below where it
began the year.
