Women hold French national flags during a protest against the verdict, which freed French national Florence Cassez, outside the French embassy in Mexico City January 28, 2013. Former workers of the state-owned electricity company Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LFC) staged a protest outside the embassy in a mock attempt to apply for French citizenship to see if the Mexican Supreme Court recognizes and protect their labour rights, as they do with foreigners, local media reported. Mexico's top court on January 23 freed Cassez, who was convicted of kidnapping, ruling that her trial was tainted and ending a seven-year imprisonment that strained ties with France.
