AN INDIGENOUS MEXICAN WOMAN WATCHES SOLDIERS PULL OUT OF THE VILLAGE OF CUXULJA IN CHIAPAS.
An indigenous Mexican woman watches soldiers as they pull out of the village of Cuxulja in the southern state of Chiapas on January 10, 2001. The one-month-old government of Mexican President Vicente Fox ordered the withdrawal, the third from Chiapas military bases since early December, as a step toward reopening peace talks with Zapatista rebels. The conflict began in 1994.
