30 Jul. 2000
Tuzantan, Mexico
Left-leaning candidate Pablo Salazar (L) marches along with leftist leader Cuauhtemoc Cardenas during a campaign rally on July 30, 2000, in the town of Tuzantan, in the strife-torn state of Chiapas. Crisscrossing Chiapas state in a bid to become its next governor, Pablo Salazar often sounds more like a revolutionary zealot than a candidate for political office. Salazar is seeking to extend a peaceful political revolution to nearly 4 million people in Mexico's poorest state, where armed Zapatista rebels declared war on the government in 1994 over the rights of its mostly poor Indian citizens.
