Atoyac De Alvarez, Mexico
RADILLA RECOUNTS STORY OF FATHERS DISAPPEARANCE IN 1970.
Tita Radilla recounts the story of her father's "disappearance" in the
1970's from Atoyac, in Mexico's conflictive Guerrero state June 27,
2001. The working-class residents of Atoyac, in the shadow of the
Pacific Coast resort of Acapulco, blame the government for some 400
disappearances of local activists, saying federal forces met civic
resistance in the region with crushing repression over the past 35
years. They are pressing President Vicente Fox to prosecute past human
rights violations, and to release information that could provide clues
to the fate of their loved ones.
