RUSSIAN PRIEST WITH CROSS AT JORDAN RIVER BAPTISM AT QASR EL YAHUID.
Vladamir, a Russian Orthodox priest from the Ukraine, lifts his large wooden cross from the Jordan River as he comes up from baptising himself in the chilly waters January 18. Scores of Orthodox Christian pilgrims gathered at the spot where tradition has it that Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist and took the plunge today on the occassion of the Orhtodox feast of the Epiphany. In Jordan, whose western bank of the Jordan River is seen behind, a site nearby here called Wadi Kharrar is earmarked as the place of Jesus' baptism.
