The Wider Image: A walk through western Mosul
Inside, are tattered curtains, crumbling wall plaster and torn up floors. Outside is a near ghost town. This is western Mosul, in normal times a place of narrow winding streets and small shops the likes of which can be found from Marrakesh to Cairo to Beirut. That's if it wasn't for the gun shots fired by Iraqi policemen targeting Islamic State fighters a few hundreds metres away. Government forces have evicted the Sunni Muslim militants from much of the city, Iraq's second largest, but not here in the west.
