SUPPORTERS OF THE LEFT WING GROUP PEACE NOW DEMONSTRATE IN TEL AVIV.
Young supporters of the Israeli group "Peace Now" light up torches during an demonstration on the Rabin square in Tel Aviv to support Ehud Barak for his peace talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara January 3. Under a law passed in January 1999, Barak must submit any deal on the Golan to a public referendum and a special parliamentary majority is also needed to give back the land. Syria's core demand is that Israel withdraw in full from the Golan heights to the borders in place on the eve of the 1967 war. Israel wants to see a core agreement - a framework for a later peace treaty - that includes security and water issues.
