VIEW FROM MOUNT HERMON OF SYRIA AND GOLAN HEIGHTS.
A wide angle view from near the summit of the 2,000 meter Mount Hermon January 12 shows the width of the northern part of Golan Heights and the proximity between Israel (R) and Syria (L). At far left (below) is Syrian territory north of the town of Kuneitra. The Israeli Golan Heights stretches from left to far right where the Hula Valley begins. Below the Israeli army lookout post (center, in snow) is the Druze town of Majdl Shams and beyond that is Lake Ram, a man-made resouvoir. The issue of the Golan Heights linked with security are major hurdles in any peace deal between Israel and Syria.
