OLD SYRIAN ARTILLERY AND TRUCKS BY ROADSIDE IN PROTEST ONVER GOLAN HEIGHTS AT BEN SHEMESH.
Israeli highway personnel paint over slogans on placards placed on rusted Syrian vehicles and placed on the shoulder of the Jerusalem - Tel Aviv highway early January 9 as a protest over any withdrawal from the Golan Heights being made during the current peace negotiations being held in West Virginia. An old artillery cannon is in foreground. The slogans painted on some of the placards on the rusted equipment captured from Syria during the 1976 and 1973 Middle East wars read, "We're Not Going Down from The Golan", "The Syrians Are On Their way", and "A Whole Generation Will Pay." Israelis are divided whether they should relinquish the Golan heights for a full peace with Syria and the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has promised Israelis a referendum on the issue.
