Ultra-Orthodox Jews hold slaughtered chickens in the Mea Shearim neighbourhood in Jerusalem October 12, 2005. Kaparot is an ancient custom connected to the Jewish Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, where white chickens are slaughtered as a symbolic gesture of atonement. The slaughtered chickens are then given to the poor.
