town of Beit Jala near Bethlehem two days ago with the declared aim of
stopping Palestinian shooting attacks on the Israeli settlement of
Gilo, on the edge of Jerusalem. The troops pulled out after Israel said
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat had agreed to rein in the gunmen.
