Israeli and Palestinian cabinet ministers held a series of meetings in
Jerusalem against the backdrop of a ceasefire that Palestinian
militants declared on June29. The talks went ahead despite Palestinian
disappointment at Israel's decision to release, as a goodwill gesture
in support of Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, only several
hundred of the 6,000 to 8,000 Palestinian prisoners it holds.
