Jordan sent an ambassador to Israel on Sunday for the first time in four years under a pledge made at a peace summit this month to fill a post left vacant since a Palestinian uprising began. al-Bakhit's arrival was also the latest Arab gesture of rapprochement with the Jewish state amid strengthened hopes for peace in the Middle East following a sharp drop in violence and an Israeli-Palestinian truce. Arriving at Tel Aviv airport, Bakhit said that "a new page in Israeli-Jordanian relations" had opened, according to Israeli Foreign Ministry officials who received him
