Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat ponders a point at the end of
President Thabo Mbeki's Presidential Peace Retreat on the crisis in the
Middle East, January 11, 2002. The Israeli and Palestinian delegations
emerged from the three day meeting, at which the government of current
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was not present, confident that a
solution could be found to the crisis. In a joint statement they called
for the resumption of talks between the Israeli government and the
