Newly promoted Hawaiian-born yokozuna (grand champion) Musashimaru is cheered by fans before performing his "Unryu" style of ring purification ritual at Meiji Shrine in Tokyo May29, marking his debut as the 67th yokozuna. Musashimaru became the second foreign-born yokozuna on May 26 following fellow Hawaiian [Akebono] who was given his historic promotion to yokozuna in 1993.
