Former political activist Ba Htoo Maung sits on the floor while his son stands beside him in his home in Yangon December 16, 2011. Htoo Htoo, as he is known, was arrested on Dec. 11, 1991, a day after Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was stabbed in the leg with a bayonet and beaten before spending the next 11 years behind bars for helping organise the 1988 protests. After his release on March 9, 2003, Htoo Htoo gave politics a wide berth. Myanmar under a new and nominally civilian government has shown itself to be more responsive to the will of people and Htoo Htoo has launched a movement he calls "Metta", a Buddhist word that roughly means goodwill or peace.
