Maori warriers bring in their canoe with the dawn on Gisborne beach to participate in a Maori ceremony to welcome the sun January 1. Gisborne is the first city to see the light of each new day. The Maori name for the district, Tairawhiti, means the coast upon which the sun shines across the waters.
