Elena Ordonez holds a picture of her husband, Antonio Chevez, at the community called "La Isla" in Chichigalpa December 22, 2011. Chevez, who worked as a sugarcane cutter in a sugar mill, died of chronic renal failure. This kidney disease is becoming a major cause of death among the men who work in sugarcane fields. Around one hundred women have lost their husbands due to this disease in the community called "The Island", also known as the "Widows Island", located 160 km (99 miles) west of Managua. The community believes that the working conditions at the sugar cane fields may be responsible for this disease, due to the constant contact with pesticides and herbicides used for pest and weed control.
