NICARAGUAN COCOA WORKER SPREADS SEEDS TO DRY AFTER HARVEST IN WASLALA.
A Cocoa worker spreads seeds to dry in the sun after harvest in the town of Waslala, some 208 miles north of the capital Managua, May 3, 2004. The production of cocoa has become an alternative for the subsistant farmers in northern Nicaragua, who prefer its profitability to the fluctuations of international coffee prices. Some small producers have even prefered to transform part their coffee plantations to cocoa in the area of Waslala. Small farmers currently export some 200 tons of organic cocoa to Europe per year.
