NICARAGUAN CHILD IS OPERATED ON FOR A HARELIP BY OPERATION SMILE DOCTOR.
Eight-month-old Nicaraguan boy Osman Alaniz is operated on to correct his harelip in the Velez Paiz hospital in Managua by a volunteer doctor of the organization "Operation Smile," February 3, 2004. Doctors from the volunteer medical group dedicated to repairing childhood facial deformities hope to operate on more than 120 children in Nicaragua before moving on to Honduras and Philippines after February 6. Operation Smile, based in Norfolk, Virginia, provides re-constructive surgery and related health care to indigent children and young adults in developing countries and the United States, and trains doctors in countries like Nicaragua.
