Suanu Baridam, secretary of the Ogoni Council of Traditional Rulers, speaks to Reuters outside his palace at Ogoniland, Nigeria's delta region August 20, 2011. An U.N. report released this month told inhabitants of Ogoniland, a region within the vast, oil-rich Niger Delta, that their environment is dangerously polluted and Royal Dutch Shell and the government are not doing enough to clean it up. The U.N. report said Ogoniland required the biggest oil clean-up in history, which could take 30 years and cost an initial $1 billion. Baridam hopes the U.N. report will build momentum that will force Shell, Nigeria's state-owned oil firm NNPC and the government into long-term action. Picture taken August 20.
