A general view of a dredging site at Plaquemines Parish
A general view of a dredging site at Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana June 22, 2010. Federal authorities have called for the state to stop dredging operations in the area and to move the dredging site farther away from the Chandeleur Islands, a sensitive chain of barrier islands, local media reported. Sand from the Gulf bottom was dredged up to construct sand berms to protect barrier islands from encroaching oil from the Gulf Coast oil spill after a BP well ruptured on April 20.
