Two sons of Lal Zarrien, a 38-year-old brick-kiln worker, make clay bricks at a Rawalpindi brick-kiln December 10. Zarrien, who has worked since the age of 10 at various brick-kilns, has eight children to feed and earns an average income of 130 Rupees ($3) for every 1,000 mud bricks. The weather determines how fast 1,000 bricks can be made, with destroyed bricks caused by wet weather rendering Zarrien and his family without pay.
