DEFENDANTS AND WITNESSES IN PAKISTAN GANG-RAPE CASE ALIGHT FROM A
POLICE BUS IN DERA GHAZI KHAN.
Defendants and witnesses in a gang-rape case alight from a police bus
inside the premises of a court in Dera Ghazi Khan, 115 km (72 miles)
west of Punjab provincial city of Multan on July 26, 2002. Four men
appeared in court on Friday accused of gang-raping a woman on the
orders of a traditional village jury in a case that has sparked outrage
across Pakistan. Three other men are charged in connection with the
rape, which happened in a remote village in southern Punjab where women
are often the pawns in feudal disputes driven by honour and revenge.
The other shackled men pictured were exonerated following their arrest
and are appearing as withnesses in the case. REUTERS/Asim Tanveer
