A Pakistani policeman guards a Muslim Shi'ite mosque in the capital of
Islamabad on March 16, 2002, the first day of the Islamic month of
Muharram. Behind the soldier, a Shi'ite child is held up to kiss a
black flag, which are hoisted at Shi'ite places throughout the month to
mourn the seventh century martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of
Prophet Mohammad, and his companions with the forces of the Umayyads
