Arturas Paulauskas arrives for a news conference in Vilnius, December 22. Paulauskas, 44, a former prosecutor general and the youngest of the candidates triumphed on Monday in the first round of Lithuania's presidential elections with a total of 45.3 percent of Sunday's ballot, but was heading for a runoff on January 4, 1998, with 71-year-old Lithuanian-American Valdas Adamkus who had polled 27.63 percent.
