Francia Egoavil, a tuberculosis patient, is hugged by her daughter while lying on her bed at their home in the outskirts of Lima November 4, 2011. Peru is the third American country with the highest incidence of tuberculosis after Haiti and Bolivia. Treatment for tuberculosis costs more than $2500 per patient and can stretch over some two years. Peru's capital, Lima accounts for more than half the cases of the disease, with the majority concentrated in the poor surrounding districts due to problems of overcrowding and malnutrition, according to the Partners in Health Peru NGO.
