Leslie Ayala, a tuberculosis patient reacts while receiving free treatment at a medical post in the outskirts of Lima October 24, 2011. Peru is the third American country with the highest incidence of tuberculosis after Haiti and Bolivia. Treatment for tuberculosis costs more than $2500 per patient and can stretch over some two years. Peru's capital, Lima accounts for more than half the cases of the disease, with the majority concentrated in the poor surrounding districts due to problems of overcrowding and malnutrition, according to the Partners in Health Peru NGO.
