PERUVIAN FARMERS BLOCK A HIGHWAY PROTESTING AGAINST CANADIANS MANHATTAN
MINERAL IN PIURA.
Farmers holding papaya and mangos block the highway to the northern
Peruvian town of Tambogrande November 5, 2003, in protest of a $405
million gold and copper mine planned by Canadia's Manhattan Minerals
Co. The protesters say that the open-cast pit - which would require
relocation of the town - would ruin their farming livelihood. The
valley produces 40 percent of Peru's limes and mangos for export to the
United States. REUTERS/Mariana Bazo
