Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo (R), accompanied by his wife Elian
Karp, lays a wreath at the site of a bank torched a two years ago to
the day during street protests he led against the inauguration of
disgraced ex-President Alberto Fujimori, July 28, 2002. Toledo
apologized for blunders in his first year in office and told his
disillusioned compatriots to be patient, despite more fiscal austerity
measures on the way.
